Primoz Roglic has finished fourth in the Tre Valli Varesine. The 33-year-old Slovenian rider of Team Jumbo-Visma sprinted to fourth place in the chase group at the Italian mountain classic. Ilan Van Wilder rode solo to victory.
From Busto Arsizio, the peloton headed towards Varese, where it completed local laps with some challenging hills. After the peloton caught the early breakaway, Wilco Kelderman took his chance at the front. The Dutch Jumbo-Visma rider was joined by two companions, but the trio was not given much breathing space. On the penultimate climb, Van Wilder attacked and crossed the line alone. In the chase group, Roglic finished just off the podium.
"It was a difficult race to control because of the many corners and hills", Kelderman said. "Although we were always well represented as a team. Attila (Valter) and I were up front a few times. In the final, it was up to Primoz to stay with the favourites, which he did."
Kelderman was pleased with the team's performance. "The plan was to anticipate the attacks and force something ourselves. Several guys got their chance today. It was challenging to build up a big lead on this course, but attacking and riding in a tactical way was excellent. We can conclude that we had a good race. We look forward to Il Lombardia with confidence."
