Anna Henderson has won a silver medal at the European Time Trial Championships. On the flat course in Emmen, the rider of Team Jumbo-Visma Women rode to a time of 36 minutes and 36 seconds. She only had to concede to top favorite Marlen Reusser this time.
Henderson planned her race against the clock well. She was third fastest at the first and second checkpoints, but she managed to move up a spot after accelerating in the final section. After a thrilling battle, the 24-year-old Henderson was slightly faster than number three, Christina Schweinberger.
"The goal was to finish in the top five, so finishing second is very special for me", Henderson recalled of the World Championships. "Then I missed the podium because Christina was one second faster. Now, I beat her by one second. Now we are even."
"I think it was the toughest time trial of my career"
According to Henderson, the time trial in and around Emmen was tough. "I think it was the toughest time trial of my career", she continued. "With four straight sections, it was for the real specialists. The wind was strong, but I think I handled it well. I tried to keep the pace high and am very happy with my performance."
Riejanne Markus had to settle for seventh place. The Dutch champion was fifth fastest at the first checkpoint but could not keep up the pace. "I was a bit afraid of this all week", Markus said. "I crashed hard twice in the Simac Ladies Tour, which prevented my body from recovering in time. Against my better judgment, I hoped it would work out, but today, it just wasn't meant to be."
