Last weekend, with E3 Saxo Classic and Gent-Wevelgem, two big Flemish classics were on the calendar. On Friday, Wout van Aert demonstrated his good shape with a win in Harelbeke. Two days later, in Gent-Wevelgem, Christophe Laporte won after a 50 kilometre-long duo attack with Van Aert. Also on Sunday, Karlijn Swinkels managed to finish fourth in Gent-Wevelgem Women. Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogacar broke away from the others with 40 kilometres to go. Van Aert managed to follow his two companions despite a difficult moment on the Oude Kwaremont. The trio reached the finish line together, after which Van Aert proved the strongest in the sprint. It’s the second consecutive win of E3 Saxo Classic for the Belgian.
Rain and wind were the ingredients for the 85th edition of Gent-Wevelgem. With around 50 kilometres to go, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte left everyone behind on the Kemmelberg. The teammates started a duo-attack towards Wevelgem after which they crossed the line hand in hand. It’s the first win for Laporte in a Flemish classic.
Team Jumbo-Visma Women also raced on Sunday. After a long fight in pursuit of eventual winner Reusser, Karlijn Swinkels just missed out on a spot on the podium. Anna Henderson also finished in the top ten after a tough race.
